The Digital Divide Initiative & Raspberries

Filed under: Digital Distribution, Projects — Robert John Ed @ 8:30 pm

A big reason that new projects and working opportunities are the raspberries.  Have you ever gone raspberry picking?  It’s a lot of fun and recommended for a great afternoon with young relatives.

As you pick raspberries something funny happens.  You think that you’ve gotten all of them.  You spend a long time working at a specific area and are pretty much finished.  Then you lift up a branch and another hundred appear.  It’s bordering on frustrating, but something that fun simply can’t be.  New jobs and projects almost always have Easter Eggs, or cool things that are hidden for users.

One of those at my new job with the BCED is the Digital Divide Initiative, a wonderful program for serving underprivileged people in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.  (Technically, almost everything the organization I’m working for does is altruistic as far as I can see.)  The program is on MLK Day and consists of upgrading older computers with new hardware, then giving the finished product back to the people who work on them!  It’s an amazing thing to do, seeing as the value of digital distribution is so important for kids growing up today.  I may update as to the success of the program afterward.
